We Built Alameda County District 2 & Hayward out of LEGO

On Saturday, October 1st, 2016, we helped Supervisor Richard Valle and the Hayward Area Parks and Recreation District build the District 2 Map out of LEGO, as well as the city of Hayward out of LEGO.  It was for Science In The Parka Biennial FREE family event that makes STEM and health compelling and accessible to children, families, and the general public in Alameda County District 2.

Families were able to find where they lived in a map of District 2 and create their neighborhood out of LEGO.  They also were able to build Hayward out of LEGO, as well as play with other LEGO-Inspired STEM projects.  Check out the videos and pictures of the event below.  If you’d like us to run a similar event for your government agency, simply complete our Special Request Form HERE.

Breaking The World’s Longest LEGO Chain Record For Jamesy

On Tuesday, September 13th, 2016, 2 years from the day that 7-Year-Old James “Jamesy” Raffone was diagnosed with the rare disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), we, Play-Well TEKnologies collaborated with Jar of Hope, to break the record for the World’s Longest LEGO Chain.

With the help of many volunteers, Jamesy’s classmates, as well as devoted teachers and principals from both Clark Mills School and Milford Brook School, we were able to break the record by 12 meters. The new record is 3108 Ft. or 919.89 Meters.  Check out videos from the event below.

If you’d like to help Jamesy, please visit Jar of Hope at jarofhope.org.

The story got picked up by AJ+.

New Jersey Local News Channels also picked up the story.

GO (Girls Only) Engineering Day at Northglen High School

On February 12th, Play-Well partnered with Northglen High School for their GO (Girls Only) Engineering Day. The goal of the day is to introduce high school girls to engineering positions and real world applications.  Throughout the day all female students partake in career panels, workshops and hear from guest speakers.  Play-Well ran a Engineering Challenge Bridge Challenge with a group of girls to teach about different types of bridges and how their structures differ. Girls worked in teams to build either corbeled arch bridges or truss bridges to span a 2.5ft distance between desks and be weight bearing.  The girls learned about compression and tension of trusses and how they are efficient in real bridges.  With collaboration and creativity all groups designed different bridges!

Thanks for having us Northglen! #GirlPower

Girl Scout Troop Earns Engineering Badge with LEGO & Play-Well

Troop 753 earned their engineering badge last Tuesday! This troop is part of the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri.

Check out that friendship bridge!

Check out that friendship bridge!

We had a great time and built a friendship bridge. Each girl scout was responsible for building a portion of the supports: All together our bridge ended up being 14 creations long! When the bridge was finished, the girls got to build cars and drive them across. They learned key concepts in structural and mechanical engineering and the benefits of creating collaboratively as well as individually – all while having tons of fun!

We love empowering girls with hands-on-learning! If your troop wants to earn their engineering badge through LEGO please contact us! We can help create the perfect program.

Building Human Spinal Columns out of LEGO with Stanford Neuroscientists

On December 5th, 2016,Stanford University Brain Development Department and Play-Well TEKnologies helped families in the Palo Alto community build human spinal columns out of LEGO.  The goal was to raise awareness about STEM education, as well as connect the Palo Alto community to the research being done at Stanford University.  Over 500 parents and kids from Palo Alto participated in the event.  As a group, they attempted to break two Guinness World Records.  One of the tallest LEGO spinal column and one for the most anatomically correct spinal columns.  They ended up building 86 anatomically correct LEGO spinal columns and one spinal column that was 9 Ft. 2 inches.

The San Francisco Chronicle covered the event.  SF Chronicle LEGO Spinal Column Event
